POINT conducted "National Workshop on the Role of Indigenous Peoples’ Shifting Cultivation Practices for REDD+ Engagement in Myanmar” at Micasa Hotel from 14th – 15th February 2017. The Workshop objectives were to share the role of IPs’ Shifting Cultivation practices and its implications, to discuss existing laws and policies related to shifting cultivation, to prepare input for REDD+ strategies on shifting cultivation in Myanmar. Civil Society Organizations, NGOs, UN-REDD program (Myanmar) and Indigenous peoples from Kachin, Kayah, Chin, Shan, Bago region, Sagaing (Naga) and Mon participated. During the event, the participants actively discussed about “Shifting Cultivation” from both of Scientific and traditional perspectives, and also discussed how to recognize the shifting cultivation areas of Indigenous peoples in Myanmar Context. The workshop was enclosed by prioritizing which activities and strategies are effective to have the recognition of IPs’ right on land.
